Cameras

All images have been created by Wildliferamblings using either the Canon Olympus OM-D E-M10 or the Sony DSC-RX10 IV.

Editing

Post-production editing is kept to a minimum (cropping, straightening, simple adjustments; all using Apple Photos). As this is not a search for perfection, it frees up time to do something else creative. Or the opportunity to id the birds in countless ‘oo what’s that?’ images; blurred and noisy, but much more reliable than a memory.

Arty Stuff

The creative modes on the Sony camera are great fun and frighteningly clever. If the light is dismal, these modes can be much more forgiving. The watercolour and illustration modes are favourites. Trouble is, once you’ve pimped a scene with Pop mode, reality looks comparatively drab!

Walking & Photography Ergonomics

Being able to carry the camera comfortably whilst on the move is key. Also essential, is that it can be accessed easily.

It’s great to have a cute and cosy bag for safe camera storage and transport ( Billingham bags are hard to beat for drool-worthy, British-made heirlooms). However, unless you are able to manoeuvre your camera from stash to shot in about 3 seconds, that’s where it is likely to stay.

What starts with the thought ‘Oh that’s interesting’ will only consistently translate into the framing of a shot if you are holding the camera in your hand. Or the next best thing.

The next best thing

If neck straps are an issue for you, and/or you’d like to keep your hands free, part or all of this set up might be useful. This is currently being used for the Sony DSC-RX10 IV.

A Gordy's Camera Straps leather neck sling strap works brilliantly and is a great investment. A handmade, stylish piece of kit that will last. In fact it improves with age. And you get to choose the colour of the thread which is joyous if you find pleasure in the little things in life.

Use a Peak Design Capture camera clip attached to a backpack strap on the chest or waist belt, or to a waist pack. For a good sized sustainable option, the Patagonia Black Hole 5L allows you to carry a small water bottle too. The clip allows you to secure the camera safely and later access it quickly. If you are stop-starting on a longer walk, this is really useful, but needs a bit of fiddling to get it positioned so that your striding leg isn’t knocking the camera.

An Exped Dryfold Bag is belt and braces if your camera is waterproof, but it stashes away so easily in a backpack, waist bag or even in a pocket, there’s no excuse not to carry it.
